The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
After two days of heavy rain, the weather that greeted our six participants was warm and partly sunny. As might be expected, snails were numerous and varied. The Decollate Snail is particularly interesting as it is predaceous on other snails. A pair of Bullock's Orioles was spotted out on the trails. We met a Rough Green Snake that seemed rather dull-colored for these usually bright green reptiles; upon close inspection, its foggy-looking eyes revealed that it was about to shed its skin. One highlight was the mating pair of Saltmarsh Moths. The next generation of large spiny caterpillars cannot be too far off! An appearance by a Texas Wasp Moth (in its outrageously gaudy "wasp" camouflage) topped off a very exciting and productive morning.
