The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
The theme this time was "cold butterflies." Nine people participated in this chilly morning survey, the last of 2010. Finding camel crickets on the archway ceiling was a surprise, as they usually remain in subterranean lairs. An interesting, albeit tiny, find was the torymid wasp on a mantis egg case. These tiny parasitoids lay their eggs within those of the mantis. The female's ovipositor is as long as her body!
