The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
This survey was a repeat of last weeks' in two respects: Six participants and a cool sunny morning which quickly warmed up. This time we noted a large number of true bugs and some beetles with tachinid fly eggs on them. One is pictured below. The maggot that hatches out of the egg will eat the insides of its victim, starting with nonessential tissues so that the insect stays alive long enough for the maggot to complete its development. We also watched a grasshopper laying her eggs in one of the garden paths. She noticed us and raised her back legs (with their spines) into a defensive position.
