Animal Stories: Manatees are one of the most unique mammals we have in this country. They are large, placid vegetarians, capable of moving quickly if they need to, but rarely bothering - sort of like aquatic cows. Although they are becoming increasingly rare, it is still easy to view them if you are in the right place. We have seen them both in captivity and in the wild. The most likely places to spot them are the brackish estuaries, where bridges are good vantage points, or in spring fed rivers where they are protected from marauding motorboats. When they surface to get a breath of air, the exhalation is often quite loud and can easily announce their presence. People who live by salty waterways in FL sometimes put out a gushing garden hose which will attract any manatees in the area because they need to drink fresh water.
