Birds page 4
Animal Stories: The only native stork in North America is the wood stork. This black-headed white bird used to be common in the Florida penninsula, and we still see them every so often, alhough not in large numbers. Just a couple of years ago, I was driving through a medium-sized Florida town and stopped at a stop light. I noticed a large white bird flying not too high overhead, and it turned out to be a wood stork. It seemed like such an improbable place to see one, that I looked very carefully to make sure my identification was correct. Although the storks used to nest in the lower part of Florida, in recent years they have moved to more northerly areas, such as Georgia, where they still nest in sizeable rookeries.
