SNAIL SHELLS

Spirals
       logarithmic gastropods
            mollusk vortices
               stripes, spots
                 lines, dots
                 bumps, spines, protuberances
                scrolls, swirls
             convoluted
         helical
     cochlear
  graceful curves
 mirroring
  the sinuous shapes
     of the waves
            under which they live

VIRGO (The Virgin)

Pristine and pure, the untouched egg

           surrounded by zealous sperm

calm, tranquil, quiet repose

           wiggling madly in their frantic struggle

peacefully floating in serene silence

           frenzied flurry of ardent activity

idle dreams

September, Week 37

TREE FROGS

Leaping
            jumping
                        falling
                                    hopping

poisonous mucous-covered amphibians
flaunting a rainbow of colors
bounding
            springing
                        frolicking
                                    plunging

tadpoles racing to mature
in puddles, bromeliads, droplets
mating
            stalking
                        pouncing
                                    eating

September, Week 38

AUTUMNAL EQUINOX

Meteors fall, streaking the sky
the wind turns cold
fruits ripen, drop, and plants wither
dainty ice filigree, frost heaves
splendid changes of color
from cool green
to deceptively warm golds and reds
estivation ends with renewing rains
or
hibernation begins with sinking temperatures
aromatic decay perfumes the air
fungi, leaf litter, earthy scents
the sunset burns
with brilliant rays
of salmon and scarlet

FALL FOLIAGE

Swirling, fluttering, drifting
wind-blown adornments
the deciduous plants
are discarding their leaves
elm, oak, beech, alder, sycamore
willow, walnut, redbud, lilac, locust
maple, catalpa, poplar, hickory, ivy
ash, cypress, birch, aspen, sumac
dogwood, sweetgum, cherry, apple, pear
honeysuckle, laurel, currant, blueberry
azalea, hawthorn, chinaberry, myrtle
beautiful crepe-paper decorations
cast off

weighing
scale insects against fish scales
